Classes for Children with Autism
Beirut - Lebanon
CCA for the Academic year 2008-2009
Introduction
In the year 2000, the LAS started a pioneer project: Integration of children with autism in a regular school (Lycée Abd-el-Kader, Hariri-foundation, Beirut-Lebanon). The project began with 3 children, in a special class where they were prepared to be included in a mainstream classroom, at the school. Since then, the project has evolved. And, in scholar year 2007-2008, the CCA relocated to Collège du Sacré-Coeur, Gemmayzeh, with 13 students.
The classes of CCA for the academic year 2008-2009:
The 14 students at CCA, for the academic year 2008-2009 are divided in two specialized classes, depending on their age and their abilities:
-The Administration: One Director with an
administrative Assistant.
-The Educational team:
One coordinator,
One integration coordinator,
One psychologist,
Two special educator,
One psychomotor-therapist,
One Speech-therapist,
4 Educators,
Seven Assistant teachers,
Four Shadow-teachers.
The CCA students benefit from a specialized multi-disciplinary intervention
The IEP (Individual Educational program) is set at the beginning of each academic year, as a guideline of the work to be done with the children. They get specialized sessions in: speech therapy, psychomotor therapy and special education therapy.
They also benefit from the school integration in the classes of the Collège du Sacré-Coeur, which is scheduled for each child, depending on his/her capacities.
This social
integration is basically offered by their presence in a mainstream school; by
sharing the rhythm of any regular school's student, and by their presence
during the recess time with all the other children of the Collège du
Sacré-Coeur
and through their participation in several events organized by the school.
This
integration is set in the regular classes of the Collège du Sacré-Coeur.
The children are assisted by the shadow-teachers, during the activities of the
class.
The main role of the shadow-teacher is mainly to support the student with autism
in his work, as well as in his social interaction. No academic integration is
provided unless the student is ready to respect the regular classroom
requirements.
